British Lions series boosted economy by R1.5bn

The rugby series between the Springboks and the British & Irish Lions boosted the South Africa economy to the tune of almost R1,5bn, a study commissioned by SA Rugby has revealed.

Image: SapaThe public interest in the ten-match series, and the impact of the arrival of 37 000 visitors from Britain and Ireland, generated R1,47bn in direct and indirect value to the travel and tourism gross domestic product (GDP) of South Africa.

The six-week tour produced close to a tenth (8,95%) of South Africa’s annual tourism GDP (based on 2008 figures) said the survey prepared by Octagon Marketing in conjunction with Kamilla-SA Sport and Tourism Consultancy and Umcebisi Business Advisors.

The study also reported that there were high levels of satisfaction expressed by respondents with both the event and South Africa as a sports tourism destination.

“A Lions Tour ranks only behind the Rugby World Cup in terms of its scale and appeal,” said Andy Marinos, acting managing director of SA Rugby.

“Such a tour places significant demands on a rugby union and its member unions but also brings many benefits.

“One of the most profound is the economic impact it has on the hosting nation. Preparing, hosting and moving around large numbers of rugby fans is a complex exercise but the most pleasing thing is that the large number of overseas visitors had an outstanding experience in South Africa.”

The survey was conducted among 812 overseas and South African rugby tourists who spent at least one night outside their city of residence during the tour. The study found that supporters spent on average R44 622 during the Series and stayed for an average of 16 days.

The majority of respondents (70%) were experiencing their first Lions tour, making up a large part of the 17 500 travel packages that were sold.

“A Lions Tour is a win-win for all concerned,” said Marinos. “The host nation’s economy benefits, the travelling supporters have an unforgettable experience to see the most keenly contested rugby there is and the tour is a financial success for the Lions, the host union and the provincial unions, sponsors and broadcasters.”

CSIR develops improved low-income house

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has developed a demonstration low-income house with an improved design that is durable and easy to extend.

The CSIR said in a statement that communities who depend on subsidised, low-income houses in South Africa can benefit greatly from the technology they have developed and tested.

“If built according to CSIR specifications, and on large scale, such houses will be constructed much faster and at similar costs than when using conventional methods,” said Dr Sibusiso Sibisi, president and CEO of the CSIR.

Sibisi said that the CSIR recognises housing provision as a national priority, and therefore has applied the knowledge of the Council towards finding a solution for the low-income housing sector.

Improved design

The biggest improvement to the CSIR’s experimental houses is an optimised design that can easily be extended by home owners.

“The house was constructed combining technologies and materials in an innovative way to improve living conditions and the durability of the home,” said Hans Ittmann, Executive Director of CSIR Built Environment.

The CSIR also used technology developed for roads to form the foundation slab of the house. They hope that this will eliminate cracked walls that result from the sub-standard foundations often found in the low-income market.

“Local labour can be used to construct such foundations, which is based on ultra-thin, continuously-reinforced concrete technology,” says Ittmann.

Improvements have also been made to the design of the bathroom and kitchen area, the plumbing installation and temperature control of the houses.

“We used a modular, design-to-fit approach similar to a Lego set where pieces have to fit together correctly to form the bigger unit,” explains Llewellyn van Wyk, senior researcher at the CSIR.

The CSIR developed the use of a waste outlet manifold that is pre-manufactured, quality-tested and installed on site. This reduces the extent of the plumbing installation substantially while ensuring that the installation is done to the required standard.

The roof of the house was improved by adding insulation material that doubles up as a ceiling. “Standard low-income houses have no ceilings and thus no insulation, which results in incredible variations in temperatures,” says Van Wyk.

The demonstration house also faces the appropriate direction to ensure that bedrooms receive sunlight, while the living room faces north.

Demonstration units will be constructed by local authorities in the Buffalo City Municipality in the Eastern Cape and at Kleinmond in the Western Cape, incorporating most components of the CSIR design.

Cape Town one of world’s best party cities

Cape Town has earned a stamp of approval from the well known travel company Lonely Planet as one of the world’s top 10 party cities. This list is part of Lonely Planet’s new guide, the “1000 Ultimate Experiences”.

According to Lonely Planet, with the 2010 World Cup bringing a global audience to South Africa the partying will only get harder as travellers converge on a city that is already well known for nightlife.

“Luxuriate on some of the world’s best beaches by day and kick back under the moonlight at suave cocktail bars by night,” suggests Lonely Planet.

The guide advises visitors to try South African wine at a Cape Town bar or one of the wineries in the area.

Mossel Bay is also recommended as a party destination. “Two hours east, in the Indian Ocean, lies the elegant beach village of Mossel Bay, with more great beaches and chic flair,” says the guide.

Other cities included in the top 10 are Belgrade in Serbia, Montreal in Canada, Buenos Aires in Argentina, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and Thessaloniki in Greece.
