Russian new nuclear arms program
The President of Russia Dmitri Medvedev has announced his country’s plans to design and develop next generation nuclear capable missiles that are expected to give a much needed boost to Russia’s nuclear deterrence, even as the United States of America and Russia are working relentlessly towards achieving a new strategic arms treaty.
Even with the announcement of the creation of new payload delivery vehicles, Russia has affirmed its stance on the strategic arms treaty with the U.S and has further stated that the new missiles will be developed fully keeping in mind the arms agreement with America. Mr. Medvedev in his end of year speech said that, the missiles and other military systems were crucial for Russian security and these new systems will provide adequate capabilities for the Russian armed forces to protect national interests.
In a statement, Mr. Medvedev said,
“Of course, we will develop new systems, including delivery systems, that is, missiles. This process will be continued, and our nuclear shield will always be efficient and sufficient to protect our national interests.”
The Russian President greatly praised U.S President Barack Obama for his initiative for a nuclear weapons free world and termed it as a “beautiful and right goal.” But, he further stated that, to achieve this dream, other nuclear states would also have to significantly reduce their arsenal and that it would have to a gradual transition.
